NEWTON FALLS ROAD BRIDGE REOPENING THIS SPRING
In December of 2023, the Portage County Engineer’s Office closed the Newton Falls Road Bridge, situated just east of Holcomb Road in Paris Township, for necessary repairs. A repair plan has been formulated by the Engineer’s Office, and completion of these repairs will be carried out utilizing County forces. The repair work is scheduled to commence based on weather conditions, with a targeted reopening planned for some time early Spring 2024.
Portage County Engineer, Larry Jenkins, said that the Engineer’s Office had previously secured grant funding for the complete replacement of this bridge back in 2020 with replacement scheduled for late 2025. Jenkins mentioned that the Commissioners have accepted the grant agreement, totaling nearly $1.4 million, with the Federal Grant covering approximately 95% of the construction expenses.
An engineering consultant has been chosen, and negotiations are underway for the design work needed for this bridge replacement. The design phase is expected to conclude in late 2024 or early 2025. The Engineer’s Office intends to put the bridge replacement out for public bidding in 2025 with a projected completion in 2026.

ORIGINAL POST – 12/8/2023. Portage County Engineer, Larry Jenkins, announced that Newton Falls Road is closed, just east of Holcomb Road, near the bridge that crosses the Mahoning River. The road will be closed until further notice. More information will be posted as it is made available.
The Portage County website lists a detour route using McClintocksburg and Griffith Roads.
